Description
In the morning, we travel by car from Paramaribo to Albina and take a dugout canoe (korjaal) to the border town of Saint Laurent-du-Maroni. What makes this town unique is that it is a tolerated zone, meaning you can visit it without having any stamps placed in your passport and without affecting your Surinamese visa. (European residents can travel freely to French Guiana, but if you wish to go beyond Saint Laurent, which is not part of this tour, you will need a new tourist visa for Suriname.)
In Saint Laurent-du-Maroni, you will have the opportunity to browse the market and shop at Super U, a large supermarket that mainly offers European (French) products. We will also visit the old prison where "Le Papillon" was held before being sent to the Devil's Islands. Additionally, we will take part in a local tour of the prison. After this enjoyable day, we will return to Paramaribo.
Please note, the market in Saint Laurent-du-Maroni is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
