A unique boat expedition into the Surinamese interior, traveling the Upper Suriname River from Atjoni to Kumalu/Ping Pe, with stays at Kosindo (Kajana) and Sintia Dam. Along the way you’ll pass dozens of villages and several rapids (Tapawatra, Grandam, Awaradam), take village walks to experience local life, and go on jungle hikes to mountains such as Schildpaddenberg (Turtle Mountain). On the 8-day tour, also Bloemenberg (Flower Mountain). Swimming, fishing, a campfire evening, and a night boat trip to spot nocturnal wildlife round out this complete nature and culture experience in the interior.
Drive PBM–Atjoni (3/4 hour), then boat trip Atjoni–Kumalu/Ping Pe (3/4 hour) passing about 30 villages. End of day: arrival at Ping Pe island.
Departure 8/9 am, boat trip past the Tapawatra and Grandam rapids with stops. Arrival at Kajana after 2/3 hours. Lunch, followed by an extensive village walk (local life, souvenirs available). Overnight at Kosindo (beds).
Boat trip past the Awaradam rapids and holiday resort (optional photo stop). After 3/5 hours travel (with stops for wildlife) arrival at Sintia Dam. Campfire in the evening.
We get ready for the hike to Schildpaddenberg (Turtle Mountain, about 300 meters high). First a 20-minute boat ride, then approximately 5/6 km there and 5/6 km back — we’re back at camp around 4/5 pm.
A morning boat trip, waking up on the river with a cup of coffee or tea. Between 9 am and 12 pm, a relaxed morning walk with explanations of the flora and fauna. Lunch at Sintia Dam. Late afternoon, swimming or fishing at the Sintia Dam rapids. In the evening, a night boat trip.
We get ready for the hike to Bloemenberg (Flower Mountain) — first a 5-minute boat ride. This mountain is known for its many bromeliad species, hence the name, and is a granite-covered mountain of about 250 meters. This hike is also approximately 6 km there and 6 km back, and we’re back at Sintia Dam between 3–5 pm.
We get ready for the journey back — first lunch at Kajana (Kosindo), then in the afternoon we continue on to Ping Pe/Kumalu.
Departure at 7:00 am to Atjoni, lunch, and back in PBM between 2–4 pm.
