Discover the historic plantations of Commewijne, exploring old sugar, cocoa, and coffee plantations, and admiring monumental architecture.
The day starts with a relaxing boat ride along the Suriname and Commewijne rivers. As the boat gently cruises past mangroves and fishing villages, your guide recounts the history of Suriname’s plantation era. You disembark at several historical sites, walking through the remnants of old sugar, cocoa, and coffee plantations. Each location tells a story of colonial ambition, labor, and legacy. You’ll meet locals, explore old buildings, and gain deep insight into Suriname’s rich past.
Highlights of the tour include visits to Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp, and the former plantations of Rust & Werk and Johan & Margaretha.
